Twenty First Annual Cape Ann Challenge

NOTICE OF RACE

Start:

Eastern Point – 12:00 Noon Warning

Finish:

Annisquam

Course Length:

Approximately 15 Nautical Miles

Registration:

Complete the Registration Form and return it with Entry Fee to the Annisquam Yacht Club no later than Friday, June 25th.

Entry Fee:

$15 ($20 for non-US Sailing members)

Race management:

The Annisquam Yacht Club will assume race management responsibilities. The Annisquam and Eastern Point Race Committees will monitor VHF Channel 71.

Rules:

The current Racing Rules of Sailing (2009-2012) as adopted by the US Sailing Association will govern this event except where specified otherwise by the PHRF Rules or the Sailing Instructions. Each participant is solely responsible for determining that their yacht is seaworthy for any and all conditions that might be encountered.

Scoring:

Yachts will be handicapped according to their 2010 PHRF Rating. All registered yachts must have an official PHRF rating. Yachts will be presumed to be competing under their racing rating unless they have (1) Indicated that they will be competing under their Cruising Rating on the registration form or (2) Notified the Annisquam or Eastern Point Yacht Club race committees prior to the Warning Signal.

 

Yachts competing under the Cruising Rating may not fly a spinnaker or similar headsail. Failure to comply with this restriction will result in disqualification.

 

All yachts will start at the same signal. Multihulls will sail as a separate class. There will be 5 prizes for monohulls and one prize for multihulls.

After Race Activities:

Prizes will be awarded at the Annisquam Yacht Club following the race. Complimentary snacks and refreshments will be provided. Some moorings may be available. Check with AYC. After the event, Sailors are invited to remain and enjoy the amenities of Annisquam Yacht Club at their own expense. Please call in advance for dinner reservations.

SAILING INSTRUCTIONS

Starting line:

Eastern Point in the vicinity of "Groaner #2" between a staff displaying an orange flag or shape on the Eastern Point Yacht Club committee boat and the starting mark.

Starting sequence:

Rule 26 of the racing rules governs the start. For example:

Course:

Cape Ann must be left to port. In addition the following buoys and aids to navigation must be left to port:

  • Salt Island Nun #4
  • Londoner Day Beacon (east of Thacher’s Island)
  • NE of Dry Salvages Bell #1
  • Flat Ground Green Bell #1
  • Lanesville Can #1

Additional instructions:

  • Yachts must not pass inside Straitsmouth or Thacher Islands.
  • Yachts must not pass between any 2 of the following buoys: Gong 3 (NW end of Sandy Bay Breakwater), Bell 1 (Flat Ground), Bell 1 (NE of Dry Salvages) and Bell 2 (Avery’s Ledge).

Finish line:

Annisquam in the vicinity of Red/White Bell #AR. The finish line will be between a staff displaying a blue flag on the Annisquam Yacht Club committee boat and the port end finish mark. The Annisquam Yacht Club Committee Boat is the Great Blue.

Length:

Approximately 15 nautical miles

Changes:

The Race Committee may shorten the course (Code flag S) by finishing the race at any mark on the course as listed above.

Time limit:

Yachts must finish by 5:00 PM. Yachts failing to finish by 5:00 pm will be scored “Did Not Finish.” This changes rules 35 and A4.

Withdrawals:

Yachts withdrawing are to notify the Annisquam Yacht Club Committee Boat.

Yachts will be presumed to be competing under their racing rating unless they have (1) Indicated that they will be competing under their Cruising Rating on the registration form or (2) Notified the Annisquam or Eastern Point Yacht Club race committees prior to the Warning Signal

Protests:

The Annsiquam Yacht Club Protest Committee will hear protests. Protests must be filed within thirty (30) minutes of the last yacht’s finish and on a form provided by the protest committee. Yachts intending to file protests must secure acknowledgement of it from the AYC Race Committee at the finish line.
